Are you tired of spending Labor Day weekend at the pool, your neighbor’s backyard barbeque, or your local mall trying to finish your back-to-school shopping?  Do you want to experience something new, perhaps act a bit crazy, just once in early September?  How about jetting to Paris this weekend for the annual Interfilière and Mode City trade fairs?  They’re premiere international intimates trade shows, held jointly, that bring together the world’s leading lingerie makers and their fabric suppliers.  This will be your last chance.  Next year, this event is being moved to mid-July.  And while Paris is always a great place to visit, it’s best to see it outside the height and heat of the tourist season.

These shows will be held in the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles exhibition center, Pavilions 3 and 4, from Saturday, September 4 to Monday, September 6.  Imagine strolling along the Champs Élysées, ascending the Eiffel Tower, and checking out the latest in torsettes – all in the same weekend.

Mode City will feature the latest in lingerie and swimwear finished goods.  It began in 1984 in Lyon, and with its growth in stature, moved to Paris in 2008.  Manufacturers, retailers, importers, wholesalers, and journalists from all over the world will attend to get a preview of intimates collections for the summer of 2011, begin placing orders, and evaluate the projects that others in the industry are working on.  It’s also a place where competitors and collaborators will meet to exchange ideas.  In addition to individual exhibits, daily fashion shows and discussion forums will be held.  This year’s forums will explore the issues involved in selling lingerie and other apparel in North America, and the growing opportunity of Eastern Europe’s expanding consumer market.

Interfilière will feature the fabrics and accessory materials used by those in the lingerie and swimwear industries.  It’s also been held for more than twenty-five years.  Lingerie designers and makers, as well as those of swimwear, ready-to-wear, and activewear, will gather to see the newest materials available, and begin developing concepts for their next collections.  The latest in knitted and woven fabrics, yarns and fibers, prints, and fabric finishes, as well as laces, embroidery, beading, buttons, and ribbons will be displayed by suppliers from around the world.  Advances in adhesives and production machinery will also be shown.  In addition, attendees will learn about the color trends that have been selected for the Autumn/Winter 2011/2012 fashion season.  And there will be discussion about the rising demand by lingerie makers for fabrics to be supplied in smaller quantities than have traditionally been made available.

Last year, more than 23,000 people attended, and the event was covered by more than 1500 journalists.  Makers of intimate apparel and fabric suppliers see these shows as great opportunities to begin generating buzz about their upcoming new products.

So, what on Earth are you waiting for?  Do you really want to camp out for another Labor Day parade?  Would you rather stop by your local art festival or meander through the halls of the Louvre?  Get thee to your favorite discount travel website, and secure your airline and hotel reservations now for the Interfilière and Mode City trade fairs.  After all, your kids can always borrow their friends’ pencils and paper at school next week.

If you could visit only one European city, which would it be?
