Are the days of sewing lingerie with needle and thread numbered?

Times are changing, and the apparel industry in the United States, where sewing operators used to number more than 700,000, has become a small fraction of its former size.  The up-and-coming centers of clothing production are now located in Asia, Central America, and, increasingly, Africa.  Traditional sewing production techniques using needles and thread have been continuously enhanced for some time through the addition of faster sewing machines and more automated processes.  So what will the future bring?   Faster and more automated sewing production? How to Make a Bra Purse

Do you have any old bras that have seen their better days?  Rather than tossing them in the trash, you might consider extending their lives by turning them into purses.  Popularized in efforts to raise awareness about breast cancer, such bra conversions have inspired contests, auctions, and even museum exhibits.

The good news is that it’s easy to turn your bras into purses.  All you’ll need is the following: a strapped bra (underwire styles work best but any style will do), a pair of scissors, some needle and thread, a glue gun, and any craft materials found around the house (like beads, pieces of lace, ribbons, etc.) that you’d want to use as decorations. Sewing shapewear (or girdles if you’re “old school”) requires patience and skill.  The high stretch and slickness of most of the fabrics, combined with the presence of multiple plies, makes attention to fabric handling very important.  As a designer of intimate apparel, I’ve learned some useful tricks over the years to make the process more successful.  These tips can also be used when making swimwear, dancewear, or panties since sewing these items creates similar challenges.  Here are seven tricks for sewing professional-looking garments.
