You’re late, you’re late, and it’s not for an important date.  Congrats – you’ve just been told you’re about to be a momma!  Now, you’re facing nine months of turbulent emotions, topsy-turvy hormones, odd cravings, baby names, strangers patting your expanding belly as if you’re the Buddha, and other crazy changes you just can’t fathom – such as breasts growing to an unbelievable size.

While I’ve yet to take the dive into motherhood myself, I have plenty of friends who are moms or moms-to-be.  And to my vexed amusement, for many of them, my connection to the intimate apparel industry has somehow morphed me into a cross between Dr. Ruth Westheimer and Jack Welch.  At the expense of TMI, they’ve offered great “real world” observations about lingerie and shapewear, including opinions about which products need to be improved upon for the masses. If you’ve gone browsing through the shapewear section of your department store, you may have found yourself doing a double take when looking at the size of the garments on the hangers.  You may even have been shocked enough to hold one up to your body and think to yourself, “Is this the wrong tag” or “This has got to be a mistake – isn’t that a child’s medium?”  A common mistake made by shapewear shoppers is upsizing a garment because it looks too small or fits too snugly. Trying on shapewear before buying it is essential; however, the experience can be frustrating.  Here are three quick tips you can use to make the process a more pleasant and successful one:

Tip #1 – If you aren’t wearing a dress when shopping for shapewear in a department store, grab a nightgown from the sleepwear section before going into the fitting room.  Slipping on a clingy cotton or satin nightie over your shaper will quickly show you whether you’ve chosen the right style and control level.  The mirror will unremorsefully display any lines or bulges that still need to be corrected.  You’ll have the chance to try on several styles until you find the one that does the best job of eliminating those flaws.  This trick also works well when looking for new bras.  Just grab a T-shirt, instead of a nightgown.  Try it on over the bras to see whether it delivers the look you want.  Remember, helping you look good in your clothes is ultimately what intimate apparel is all about. All women aren’t shaped alike.  Though aware of this, shapewear manufacturers face limitations; they can’t create an unlimited number of patterns for each size of every shapewear style they produce.  Every woman who wears a certain size, and wants a certain style, must buy the same garment.  It’s inevitable, then, that one product will feel differently to different women.  Some will find it comfortable, others won’t.

However, when fit adjustability is designed into a shapewear style, more women receive its smoothing, slimming, and/or shaping benefits, while feeling comfortable at the same time.
