Trying on shapewear before buying it is essential; however, the experience can be frustrating.  Here are three quick tips you can use to make the process a more pleasant and successful one:

Tip #1 – If you aren’t wearing a dress when shopping for shapewear in a department store, grab a nightgown from the sleepwear section before going into the fitting room.  Slipping on a clingy cotton or satin nightie over your shaper will quickly show you whether you’ve chosen the right style and control level.  The mirror will unremorsefully display any lines or bulges that still need to be corrected.  You’ll have the chance to try on several styles until you find the one that does the best job of eliminating those flaws.  This trick also works well when looking for new bras.  Just grab a T-shirt, instead of a nightgown.  Try it on over the bras to see whether it delivers the look you want.  Remember, helping you look good in your clothes is ultimately what intimate apparel is all about.

Tip #2 – Make sure to look for sizes that match who you are, not who you want to be.  One day several years ago while working in a store, I encountered the mother of a groom-to-be who was looking for some shapewear.  As it turned out, there was only a week to go until the wedding and she was in a hurry to ensure that she’d look her best.  At the time, I didn’t know as much about shapewear as I do now.  At her insistence, I squeezed her into a high-waist brief with hooks in the front.  It was clearly not her size.  By the time I was done, I had raw fingers from fastening the hooks, and I wanted her to sign a release in case she passed out during the reception.  She couldn’t have been very comfortable.  Remember, when wearing shapewear, there’s no need to sacrifice comfort for results.  You’ll have a much better time at your special events if you can breathe.  Also, keep in mind that choosing sizes that are too small can cause your shapewear to transfer your figure flaw from one spot to another.

Tip #3 – Try on as many pieces of shapewear as you can.  If you think it’s hard to find a new bra because all bras fit differently, imagine the challenge when searching for shapewear.  There are shapers made to address all problem areas, both above and below the waist, from the shoulders down to the calves.  Every style is cut a little differently.  And some provide light control, others comfortable-firm control, some firm control, and others extra-firm control.  The good news is that many are made of modern, lightweight fabrics and some have silicone edges that eliminate lines and prevent the garments from riding up.

Make sure to allot plenty of time for your journey into the fitting room and have fun.  Fortunately, today’s shapewear garments are not your mother’s girdles!
