Well, it’s that time of year again.  The world’s attention was drawn to Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania this morning in anticipation of the weather forecast of famed groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil.  Everyone wondered, “Will it be an early spring or six more weeks of winter?”  Like it or not, it looks like winter will hang on until the end of March.  For those who make it a point each year to hear Phil’s prediction (like the 12,000 people in attendance at Gobbler’s Knob this morning), the result was not surprising.  According to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, Phil has predicted six more weeks of winter nearly 100 times since 1887.  What is surprising are the reports out of western PA that, given the annual growth in attendance at this event and the worldwide attention his appearance generates, Phil and his wife Phyllis (sorry to burst your bubbles, ladies, but Phil is taken) are seriously considering updating their looks.  A source close to Phil has indicated that the marmots are strongly considering adding shapewear to their wardrobes next year. As a guy, I can only imagine how difficult it must be for women to shop for intimate apparel.  There’s an astounding variety of bras, panties, and shapewear on display in every clothing store’s lingerie department, and the hunt for the right piece must feel overwhelming when you don’t know exactly which style, size, and color you want to buy.  Also, intimate apparel is just that – intimate.   It must be difficult to ask for help from salespeople who are total strangers, or have other shoppers watch what you pull off the rack, when the items you’re looking at are normally hidden from the outside world.  So, it’s not at all surprising that I usually receive confused, anxious, suspicious, and sometimes even angry looks from women when I walk into an intimate apparel department.  But I wonder how many women take a moment to think about how uncomfortable most men are who have to make their way into such foreign territory, or the real reason the men are there? All women aren’t shaped alike.  Though aware of this, shapewear manufacturers face limitations; they can’t create an unlimited number of patterns for each size of every shapewear style they produce.  Every woman who wears a certain size, and wants a certain style, must buy the same garment.  It’s inevitable, then, that one product will feel differently to different women.  Some will find it comfortable, others won’t.

However, when fit adjustability is designed into a shapewear style, more women receive its smoothing, slimming, and/or shaping benefits, while feeling comfortable at the same time.

Why You Need a Wardrobe of Shapewear

Have you ever had trouble sleeping late at night, turned on the TV, and run across one of those shapewear infomercials that promised that one revolutionary garment could solve all of your figure-improvement needs?  Or, have you ever browsed through a lingerie department and thought, “Why do they make so many different kinds of shapewear?  Who’d ever need all of that?”  The fact is that the wide variety of products available to shape, control, and smooth a woman’s figure serves an equally wide variety of purposes that no one garment (or even a few) can serve by itself.  Shapewear’s no different than the outerwear fashions it complements – it’s a category of apparel that’s most useful and enjoyable when its many different components are collected as an ensemble and worn on different occasions.
