Though referenced repeatedly in American pop culture over the past 25 years or so (as in the 1984 movie, Revenge of the Nerds), the panty raid as a living, organized, mass prank has joined the likes of goldfish swallowing and phone-booth stuffing as something found only in history books.  As a result, most people today have either forgotten, or never known, that the panty raid fad of the 1950s and 1960s was more than mere campus fun – it was serious, front-page news. TSA – Traveling Shapewear Alert

Recently, while traveling on a business trip, I was making my way through a security checkpoint at the Las Vegas airport when I set off the metal detector’s alarm.  As all of us have done in response to that situation, I took off my watch and jewelry (even though these items had never triggered the alarm on any of my previous trips).  I walked through the detector again and, sure enough, the alarm sounded again.  The TSA officer told me to step off to the side, where another TSA officer – this one, a woman – was to conduct a more thorough screening. Recently, I had the chance to spend some time at a hotel in the middle of Lancaster County – the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch country.  I was able to see some sights I don’t normally witness at home.  For instance, one morning as I breakfasted, I saw an Amish gentleman driving his horse-drawn buggy along the side of the road.  Several minutes later, he was followed by three young girls garbed in traditional long dresses and bonnets, carrying their schoolbooks.  After I finished eating, I was depositing my empty plate in a nearby trash can when my eyes spotted a rather surprising, laminated flier.  “Nana’s Naughty Knickers,” it read.  I was shocked.  Why on earth was something about racy lingerie taking up residence in such an idyllic, old-fashioned setting? If you’re like most people from around the world, over the past couple of weeks you’ve been watching the XXI Winter Olympics being held in Vancouver, Canada.  During the Summer and Winter Games, the events themselves are the primary attractions of course, but there are always many other interesting features for fans to absorb.  There are the personal stories of the athletes themselves; the sights, sounds, and histories of the host venues; and the international political tensions that sometimes arise among the disparate group of competing nations.  But, let’s face it, all of that can get a bit tiresome.  There’s been another topic of conversation, throughout these and previous Olympic Games, which merits some attention as well.  And that topic is underwear.
