Have you heard of the Lingerie Football League?  Founded last year, it’s the newest incarnation of the pay-per-view Lingerie Bowl that was created to compete with the 2004 to 2007 Super Bowl halftime shows.  Consisting of teams from ten American cities, it’s a full-contact, seven-on-seven, tackle football league in which players’ uniforms consist of matching satin-and-lace bras, panties, and garters (along with ice-hockey-style helmets, shoulder pads, knee pads, elbow pads, and athletic shoes).

It’s undeniable that the women who play on these teams are attractive.  Obviously, that’s the point of creating and marketing a bra-and-panty football league.  But they’re also athletic, and many play the game quite well.  And though make-up is a part of the uniformed look of the players, no one should be under the illusion that the competition is of the powder-puff variety.  The players hit each other hard, and injuries, like torn ligaments, concussions, and broken bones, are not uncommon. Are you tired of spending Labor Day weekend at the pool, your neighbor’s backyard barbeque, or your local mall trying to finish your back-to-school shopping?  Do you want to experience something new, perhaps act a bit crazy, just once in early September?  How about jetting to Paris this weekend for the annual Interfilière and Mode City trade fairs?  They’re premiere international intimates trade shows, held jointly, that bring together the world’s leading lingerie makers and their fabric suppliers.  This will be your last chance.  Next year, this event is being moved to mid-July.  And while Paris is always a great place to visit, it’s best to see it outside the height and heat of the tourist season. Fashion is, indeed, a fickle beast.

For most of the past several centuries, women have squirmed and twisted their way into full-length corsets, girdles, control-top pantyhose, and any other garments that promised to slim ample hips and backsides.  When those slenderizing promises didn’t exactly come to fruition, most pear-shaped ladies concealed their abundant assets beneath long and shapeless skirts, fervently hoping that no eyes strayed south-of-the-border to Nature’s plenty. Last week, this blog offered some laundering tips to help keep black lingerie looking its blackest.  But what about white intimates?  Though not as popular as it once was, white is perhaps the most traditional color of underwear, and can still be found in most dresser drawers and closets.  Maintaining its brightness and clarity is important, and may be the most challenging of all laundering tasks.

Keeping white bras, panties , and shapewear their whitest requires a mostly different set of tactics than that used to care for black lingerie.  However, as with black undies, remember the laundry room’s first rule of thumb – the steps you take to clean your unmentionables should never contradict the instructions on your garments’ care labels.  Maintaining your shapewear’s bright white appearance, for example, will do you no good if you ruin the integrity or stretch of its fabrics.
