Shapewear Delivers Fairy-Tale Endings

Yesterday, when I was at the library, a funny thought occurred to me.  Could classic children’s fairy tales be re-written as allegories for adults to help convey the benefits of modern shapewear?   Would these be appealing to moms more accustomed to stories of little pigs and sleeping princesses than to testimonials about spandex and nylon?  Since checking out my paperbacks, the seeds of fairy-tale e-books have been dancing through my head – fairy tales with a twist (or, rather, a squeeze), of course.   I doubt the likes of Hans Christian Andersen and the Brothers Grimm ever dreamed that their stories might be adapted for such a purpose someday. Bras, Girdles, and Panties: Memorable Moments in Television History

Intimate apparel has been advertised on TV for decades.  But the most memorable moments for bras, girdles, and panties in television history have occurred when these items have taken center stage on programs themselves, not in commercials.  Here are six of the funniest examples.

The first one is from the fifth season of the sitcom Seinfeld.  In the episode entitled, “The Sniffing Accountant,” Frank Costanza arranges for his son George to interview for a bra salesman’s position at a women’s underwear company.  As Frank tries to prepare George for the interview, the dynamics of George’s relationship with his parents overwhelm the lesson.

TSA – Traveling Shapewear Alert

Recently, while traveling on a business trip, I was making my way through a security checkpoint at the Las Vegas airport when I set off the metal detector’s alarm.  As all of us have done in response to that situation, I took off my watch and jewelry (even though these items had never triggered the alarm on any of my previous trips).  I walked through the detector again and, sure enough, the alarm sounded again.  The TSA officer told me to step off to the side, where another TSA officer – this one, a woman – was to conduct a more thorough screening. A Song and Dance About Girdles, Bras, and Underpants

The inclusion in last Thursday’s post of Bette Midler’s song from Beaches about a fictitious bra inventor, Otto Titzling, got me thinking.  I wondered how many other songs had been written about bras, panties, shapewear, or any other kinds of intimate apparel.  After doing a little research, I found out that the answer was “quite a few.”  What follows is an eclectic sampling of the ditties I found.
