Itâs that time of year again.  Christmas and Valentineâs Day are big holidays for intimate apparel stores and departments. Catalog space and promotions highlight sales of lingerie. Satin and silk chemise and robe sets and richly-colored coordinating bra-and-panty sets are just a few of the timeless staple items of the season. And itâs not just women doing all of the shopping for this stuff. These holidays are also occasions for wallets to spew out good intentions, and for men to journey into foreign territory and buy some things for the ladies in their lives.
1.      Donât be afraid to talk to sales people.  Many men are uncomfortable in intimate apparel departments or boutiques. They shouldnât be.  Not only will sales associates help you find exactly what youâre looking for, theyâll probably get you out of the store faster. They can help you navigate through the differences among fabrics, such as silk, satin, and lace, and the many silhouettes in which intimate apparel is available.
2.      If youâre really uncomfortable shopping in an intimate apparel boutique, you can always shop privately online.  Most online intimates retailers provide great descriptions and detailed photographs of their products.
3.      Donât try to guess your significant otherâs size.  And donât compare your loverâs breasts to fruit. Contrary to what some say, the fruit analogy just isnât accurate. Also, please resist the temptation to say to the sales person that your best galâs breasts look like hers (thatâs just plain weird). Instead, wait until your lady is away from her intimates drawers, open them up, and write down her bra, panty, and nightgown sizes.  Using these numbers, youâll be able to find the correct sizes for items like teddies, baby dolls, bustiers, and more.
4.      Shop with a buddy, but not your buddy.  If youâre close to your womanâs sister or best friend, ask one of them to come along or provide suggestions.
5.      Remember for whom the gift is being bought. Buy for her tastes, not yours.  She might not enjoy the gift if itâs over-the-top or way out of her comfort zone.  If itâs your first time buying lingerie for her, you can dial up the excitement a little to gauge her reaction.  If it turns out to be a hit, there will always be birthdays or anniversaries for which you can go to the next level.
6.      Ask for a gift receipt or, if that isnât available, keep the original receipt.  Shopping for someone else can be difficult, and when you throw fit into the mix -particularly the fit of a bra – finding a great match becomes extra difficult.
7.      If you feel unsure of yourself or overwhelmed, you can always purchase a gift card to an intimate apparel store.  The intent of the gift will be expressed, but you wonât have to worry about all of the variables about whichyouâre uncertain.
Kudos to all the guys out there taking on such a challenge!  Following theses 7 pieces of advice will make it more likely that your purchases will turn out to be successful.  Lingerie (given by the right man) makes a romantic and thoughtful gift. Tell us your story of giving, or receiving, lingerie below.
