Intimate apparel has been advertised on TV for decades.  But the most memorable moments for bras, girdles, and panties in television history have occurred when these items have taken center stage on programs themselves, not in commercials.  Here are six of the funniest examples.

The first one is from the fifth season of the sitcom Seinfeld.  In the episode entitled, “The Sniffing Accountant,” Frank Costanza arranges for his son George to interview for a bra salesman’s position at a women’s underwear company.  As Frank tries to prepare George for the interview, the dynamics of George’s relationship with his parents overwhelm the lesson.

The second example is one of the most famous episodes ever broadcast from the iconic game show, What’s My Line.  The clip, from 1956, features the celebrity panel trying to guess that the guest is a girdle tester.  In an era when what could be said on television was more strictly controlled than it is today, the guest’s occupation makes for some funny questioning.

The third example, from the third season of That ’70s Show, centers on panties.  In this clip, Donna confronts her boyfriend, Eric, in a diner after she discovers a pair of panties, that aren’t hers, in Eric’s car.  Though she suspects that they belong to the girl with the most notorious reputation in school – who also happens to be Eric’s lab partner – she’s shocked when she discovers the panties’ real owner.

The fourth example comes from overseas.  Watch as two contestants compete to enter the Guinness Book of World Records for unhooking the most bras in 60 seconds.  The stunt isn’t as easy as it might at first seem, as each double-hooked bra must be undone through a T-shirt with the use of only one hand.

The fifth example comes from the long-running 1950s television series, Make Room for Daddy.  In the following scene, Danny Thomas is caught by his daughter trying on one of his wife’s girdles.

And the final example is a clip from The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. When Jay and his guest, model Cindy Crawford, cut a deck of cards, Cindy’s losing hand forces her to duck behind a chair and pay up.

What was the funniest story about intimate apparel in Seinfeld’s nine seasons?
