Though most women don’t wear strapless tops or dresses every day, there are times that call for them. Walk through the formal dress department of your favorite retailer and you’ll be amazed at the beautiful strapless selections that are available – cocktail dresses, elegant evening wear, sparkly holiday outfits, and prom gowns in all the colors of the rainbow. But a question instantly comes to mind – “What to wear underneath?”

Intimate apparel departments feature vast arrays of “specialty” bras and accessories to answer that question.  Displays showcase many types of strapless bras – those that enhance, minimize, or push up, as well as those that are seamless. All seem to have detachable straps that allow them to be placed in a conventional, halter, wide-set, narrow-set, or crossover pattern.  Such flexibility improves the versatility of the bra and allows it to be worn with a number of different outfits. The number of permutations is almost endless. In addition, the number of different bra accessories is equally enormous.  There are pads, petals, gels, tape, straps, cushions, stick-ons, and extenders.  It’s amazing what women will buy to make that special strapless dress or top “work”. Unfortunately, they don’t always work.

I was in a department store recently when an obviously unhappy lady walked out of the fitting room with an armful of strapless bras.  I asked her if she needed help. She explained that she was getting married, was looking for a strapless bra with a D cup to be worn with her wedding dress, and was having no luck finding what she needed.  Nothing fit – the cups just weren’t right.  They either felt too bulky or seemed like they wouldn’t stay in place. “Stick-ons” simply were not an option.

I suggested she try on a strapless shaping camisole instead of a strapless bra. Taking my advice, she went back into the fitting room and in a little while – voila – came out with a big smile on her face. The strapless shaping cami was perfect! She said it fit like a dream and was so comfortable. It also gave her the added benefit of a smoother, slimmer midriff.

She thanked me for suggesting it and said she would be thinking about me on her wedding day.  I told her she should be thinking about other things on that day!

So, next time that special occasion outfit requires a strapless bra, consider a strapless cami. They provide shaping and support for the bust, and deliver the added bonus of midriff slimming. Many also come with detachable clear straps. You may be pleasantly surprised at how comfortable they are. You’ll have more fun at that party without having to worry about anything slipping out of place!

When wearing a top or dress that bares your shoulders, how do you usually handle the issue of bra straps?
